Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is set to appear before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday, October 6, 2025, in connection with an ongoing investigation into Akonta Mining Limited, a company associated with him.
The development comes after Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, cautioned on Friday, October 3, that the NPP chairman would face arrest if he failed to honour the CID’s invitation, revealing that charges against him had already been prepared.
Dr. Ayine explained that progress on the case had been delayed because key dockets were concealed during the previous administration, hindering investigations.
Meanwhile, Chairman Wontumi’s legal team has expressed surprise at the Attorney General’s public remarks. His lawyer, Andy Appiah Kubi, told Citi News on Sunday, October 5, that his client would comply with the directive to appear before the CID, describing Dr. Ayine’s comments as unnecessary.
“We have been asked to appear at the police CID in Accra, which we are ready for, and we will be there at 10 a.m. at the police CID headquarters. This announcement by the Attorney General surprises me. I said, we respect the invitation and we will honour it, but I think the warning that followed that announcement was unnecessary,” he stated.
He further stressed that Chairman Wontumi has consistently cooperated with investigative bodies. “We are not in any way going to disrespect the invitation,” he added.
The CID appearance comes on the heels of a separate encounter with the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) earlier this year.
Wontumi was invited by EOCO as part of investigations into alleged financial irregularities related to mining operations. He complied with that invitation and provided statements to investigators during the session.
