The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has threatened to join Ghana Railways Company workers on strike on September 30, 2025, due to unpaid salary arrears spanning 12 months. The strike is set to begin on September 30, 2025.
According to them, it’s been 12 solid months since the workers of the company, which is wholly owned by the Government of Ghana, received their salaries.
The TUC and the Railway Workers’ Union have worked tirelessly to get the government to intervene and pay the workers. Despite writing letters and engaging with the government at the highest level, the workers have yet to receive their salaries.
Speaking at a press conference, Joshua Ansah, Secretary-General of the TUC, hinted that Ghana Railway Company is struggling due to deteriorating infrastructure, which has crippled its haulage business. The government has also withdrawn its support for the company, which the TUC finds strange given the critical role the railway sector plays in national development.
The TUC is demanding that the government act decisively and urgently to pay the workers’ salaries. The union is no longer willing to settle for assurances and is calling on the government to prioritise investments in the railway sector. The TUC believes that cities like London and New York would grind to a halt without railways, highlighting the importance of investing in the sector.
Caution to Ministry and Authority
The TUC cautions the Ministry of Transport and the Ghana Railway Development Authority against attempts to run the trains without the operator, the Ghana Railway Company Limited. The TUC will resist any attempt to sideline the Ghana Railways Company Limited.
