Former Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, Kobina Tahir (K.T.) Hammond, has cautioned members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against allowing the upcoming flagbearer contest to be driven by money, stressing that true leadership must be grounded in ideas and vision.
Speaking in Adansi Asokwa on Wednesday during Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign engagement, Mr. Hammond reminded party faithful that the NPP was built on sacrifice and selfless service, not the flaunting of riches.
“Since 1992, the party has been blessed with wealthy men and women. But they supported us quietly, without demanding leadership in return. In the difficult days when we financed the party, did you ever hear us boasting about it? Leadership in the NPP has always been about a contest of ideas and vision for development. We must return to those values,” he said.
Mr. Hammond praised Dr. Bawumia’s strategy of meeting constituency executives and delegates directly, describing him as the candidate best positioned to lead the party into 2028.
“I am convinced that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia embodies the vision and ideas the party needs. Let’s rally behind him and maintain him for 2028. He has what it takes to deliver victory for the NPP,” he added.
Dr. Bawumia is on a three-day tour of the Ashanti Region, where he is formally informing executives of his intention to seek their support at the polling station level.
So far, five aspirants have filed to contest the party’s flagbearer primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026. They are Dr. Bawumia, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, Abetifi MP Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Bosomtwe MP Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong.
