The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Asafuah, has raised concerns about a shifting political trend in the Ashanti Region, warning that many young people in the party’s stronghold are now open to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking on Oyerepa FM’s Breakfast Time, Mr. Asafuah said his interactions with young people in the region suggest that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) can no longer rely on the automatic loyalty of the Ashanti youth.
“The young people in this region (Ashanti), I do engage them a lot whenever I come home. You could see a laissez-faire kind of attitude in them. They’re open to whatever goes on; they really don’t care. Unlike those days when you could see the Ashanti youth have some amount of hatred for the umbrella party (NDC). But this time, quite a number of them are open to the NDC,” he observed.
According to the Old Tafo MP, this development should be a wake-up call for the NPP, especially after the party’s poor showing in the 2024 general elections.
He stressed that if the NPP hopes to maintain its dominance in the Ashanti Region, it must adopt a new style of politics that prioritises the needs and aspirations of the youth.
“This only tells us that as a party (NPP), we have to change our style of politics. And we have to make sure we meet the demands of the young people,” he emphasised.
Mr. Asafuah’s remarks add to growing concerns within the NPP following its electoral defeat, with many analysts pointing to voter apathy, unfulfilled promises, and frustrations among the youth as key factors behind the party’s declining popularity in its traditional base.
