The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Asafuah, has attributed Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s defeat in the 2024 presidential elections to the failings of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, and not the Vice President’s religious background.
Speaking on Oyerepa FM’s Breakfast Time, Mr. Asafuah dismissed claims that Bawumia’s Muslim faith played a role in the electoral outcome. Instead, he pointed to what he described as the government’s inability to deliver on critical infrastructure and development projects, particularly in the Ashanti Region—the party’s stronghold.
“The reason why Bawumia lost the 2024 elections was not about him being a Muslim; it was because the NPP failed to construct major projects in Ashanti. Simple Suame interchange, we couldn’t construct it,” he stated.
According to the Old Tafo legislator, the government’s own inefficiencies created disaffection among the electorate.
He cited bureaucratic delays as one of the major setbacks, recalling that the Ministry of Finance took over a year to submit a letter to Deutsche Bank to secure approval for the Suame Interchange project.
“In 2021, just a simple letter from the finance ministry to Deutsche Bank to approve the construction of the Suame interchange, it took us one year to submit the letter. This is how people messed us up,” Mr. Asafuah revealed.
He stressed that voters punished the NPP at the polls because of its internal failures and inability to meet expectations, not because of Bawumia’s religion.
“People did not vote for Bawumia, and this was because of the mess we caused ourselves and people,” he emphasised.
Dr. Bawumia, who contested the 2024 general elections as the NPP’s flagbearer, lost to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, bringing an end to the NPP’s eight-year tenure under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
