Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has emerged victorious in the Akwatia by-election, securing a decisive win in one of the most hotly contested polls of the year.
Certified results from the Electoral Commission showed Bediako polling 18,199 votes, defeating his main challenger, Kwame Asumadu of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), who obtained 15,235 votes. Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) finished a distant third with just 82 votes. In total, 33,819 valid ballots were cast, while 303 votes were rejected.
The by-election was triggered by the death of Akwatia’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, earlier this year. In the lead-up to the poll, both the NDC and NPP mounted vigorous campaigns, pouring significant resources and manpower into the constituency.
Voting took place on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, across 119 polling stations. Polls closed at 5 p.m., after which ballots were counted under the supervision of party agents, security personnel, and election observers.
Bediako’s victory sparked jubilant celebrations among NDC supporters, who thronged the streets of Akwatia with singing and dancing.
Political analysts say the outcome is particularly significant because Akwatia has long been a swing constituency, alternating between the NDC and NPP in previous elections. The NDC’s triumph is being interpreted as a major confidence boost for the governing party as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.
With this win, Bernard Bediako Baidoo becomes the new MP for Akwatia, pledging to build on the legacy of his predecessor while advancing development initiatives in the constituency.
