The campaign team of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong has accused the party’s leadership of shamelessly promoting Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the preferred “establishment choice” ahead of the party’s presidential primaries.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Thursday, August 28, and signed by campaign spokesperson Kwasi Kwarteng Esq., the team condemned the use of the NPP’s official social media platforms to exclusively stream Dr. Bawumia’s nomination filing event.
“The use of the official party’s social media handles to stream only DMB’s nomination filing is a betrayal of the very unity our national leadership claims to preach,” the statement read.
The campaign described the act as part of a broader pattern of bias that has long plagued the party’s internal processes, allegedly designed to tilt the contest in favour of Dr. Bawumia.
Kwarteng further argued that such conduct has already weakened party cohesion and contributed to the NPP’s worst-ever performance in the 2024 general elections.
“Under his watch, we recorded the worst results in our party’s history: a 31% drop in national votes, a 16% decline in northern votes, a 33% fall in southern votes, and virtually no support from the Zongo communities,” he claimed.
The statement criticised party leadership for continuing to promote the Vice President despite these electoral setbacks, rather than prioritising unity and rebuilding trust.
“At such a time, the focus should be on restoring confidence and bringing the party together. Instead, leadership persists in shamelessly projecting the very candidate under whom we suffered these losses, dressing him up as the ‘establishment choice’ by granting him undue advantages and platforms,” Kwarteng added.
The Ken Agyapong campaign also issued a warning that ongoing favoritism could push other aspirants to chart independent courses.
“If this continues, leadership should not be surprised when other candidates decide to take their destiny into their own hands. The grassroots will not sit quietly while the future of the party is mortgaged for one individual. Never!” the statement concluded.
