The family of veteran Highlife musician, Daddy Lumba, has officially informed the government of his demise.
On Monday, August 25, the family called on the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, at the Jubilee House to traditionally and formally notify them of the death of the music icon, who passed on Saturday, July 26. The meeting followed discussions on funeral arrangements and possible state support to honour Daddy Lumba’s memory. (Read Daddy Lumba’s one week to be held on August 30 in Accra, funeral in Kumasi)
As part of the arrangements, the family announced that a one-week observance will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at the University of Ghana Stadium to honour Daddy Lumba’s memory.
The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, speaking on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama and the Presidency, conveyed heartfelt condolences to the family.
“Daddy Lumba was not just a musician; he was a national treasure whose voice, lyrics and artistry touched every corner of Ghanaian society,” Mr Debrah said.
“On behalf of the President and the people of Ghana, we extend our deepest sympathies to the family. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.”
He assured the family of the government’s support in ensuring that the late music icon is celebrated.
Since his passing, tributes have poured in from musicians, political leaders and fans, celebrating Lumba’s immense contribution to Ghanaian music and culture.
Daddy Lumba, born September 29, 1964, skyrocketed to fame in the 1980s, becoming a highlife legend.
With a career spanning over 30 years, he dropped more than 30 albums, including hits like “Aben Wo Ha,” “Theresa,” “Yentie Obiaa,” and “Playboy.”
Before launching his successful solo career, Lumba cut his teeth with the Lumba Brothers, a duo with Nana Acheampong in Germany.
