G/A: Residents Angrily Confront Gbawe Assembly After Two Children Drown in Deadly Storm Drain
Concerned residents of Gbawe Zero Machandi Estates in the Weija-Gbawe Municipality have issued a strong warning to the Municipal Assembly and relevant authorities to urgently fix what they describe as a “death trap” storm drain, which has already claimed the lives of two children.
The residents explained that the situation has created fear and panic in the community, as the storm drain continues to erode due to the constant flow of water whenever it rains. This, they say, poses grave danger to both residents and motorists.
According to them, the rainwater has washed away the sand used to fill the drain, leaving it hanging and unstable. The structure continues to collapse gradually, extending into the main road.
Speaking to Oyerepa News Reporter Nana Ansah, the concerned residents revealed that they had raised the issue to the MCE more than two months ago, but no action has been taken.
They lamented that two children had already drowned in the drain, and warned that any heavy rainfall in the future could split the road into two, leading to another disaster. They therefore called on the Assembly and the government to address the situation immediately to prevent further tragedy.
Meanwhile, Ms. Rev. Selasie Wemegah, Administrator of Keep My Words Cathedral, Lighthouse Chapel, also expressed worry over the situation.
She noted that heavy trucks frequently use the road, and with the drain in its current state, it remains a ticking time bomb.
She appealed to the Assembly to urgently intervene and repair the drain to safeguard the lives of residents, especially schoolchildren who cross the bridge daily.
