Illegal miners have shifted their activities from cocoa farms to rubber plantations in the Western Region, with over six hectares of Ghana Rubber Estate Limited (GREL) land destroyed.
A joint anti-galamsey operation in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality on Thursday, August 21, led to the arrest of 12 suspects and the destruction of 25 chanfang machines.
The operation, involving personnel from the Second Infantry Battalion, police, and national security, was carried out at Adiewoso and Tetreim. Twelve suspects—including one female and 11 males—were arrested, while two tricycles and one motorcycle were also seized.
Following widespread devastation of cocoa farms, GREL has now reported declining rubber production, tree uprooting, and premature tree deaths caused by illegal mining and chemical use. The company estimates that about 2,000 mature rubber trees ready for tapping have been destroyed.
“Illegal mining activities are destroying these rubber plantations, causing significant production losses due to chemical contamination and water pollution. We are committed to sustaining operations, as this viable company cannot afford to be crippled by low production,” a company representative stated.
Brigadier General Musa Whajah (Rtd.) confirmed the arrests and destruction of equipment, describing the operation as successful.
“The operation focused on Adiewoso and Tetreim, yielding significant results. We arrested 12 suspects, seized two tricycles and one motorcycle, and destroyed 25 chanfang machines. Additionally, we briefed the company’s internal security team on strategies to contain the situation,” he said.
Brigadier General Whajah urged GREL to intensify community engagement to curb the menace.
“The company must prioritize comprehensive community engagement and provide alternative livelihood options. The lure of quick gains from illegal mining has made it difficult for companies to attract employees. It is necessary to educate communities about the long-term damage caused by these activities,” he advised.
The arrested suspects and seized items are currently in police custody at Agona Nkwanta, pending further investigation.
