The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has issued a strong rebuttal to recent claims suggesting that Ghanaian cocoa farmers are receiving lower farmgate prices than their counterparts in Côte d’Ivoire.

According to COCOBOD, current market data shows that Ghana is offering the highest farmgate price for cocoa in West Africa.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, August 20, COCOBOD stated that the official producer price in Ghana stands at ₵3,228.75 per 64kg bag, equivalent to ₵51,660 per tonne or US$5,040 per metric tonne (MT). This compares with ₵2,553.38 per 64kg bag in Côte d’Ivoire, or ₵40,854 per tonne (US$3,886/MT).

The data, compiled in August 2025 by the Commodity Analysis Team, reveals a significant price advantage for Ghanaian farmers:
₵675.38 more per bag (US$64.16)
₵10,806 more per tonne (US$1,154)

“This is not a matter of interpretation — it is a matter of fact,” the statement read. “On every key metric, Ghanaian farmers are earning more.”

Key Comparisons:

Per Kilogramme: Ghana – ₵51.65 (US$5.04) | Côte d’Ivoire – ₵40.85 (US$3.89)
Per 64kg Bag: Ghana – US$315 | Côte d’Ivoire – US$227
Per Tonne: Ghana – US$5,040 | Côte d’Ivoire – US$3,886

COCOBOD emphasised that any claims suggesting parity or inferiority in Ghana’s cocoa pricing are “factually inaccurate and misleading.”

According to COCOBOD, the competitive pricing strategy is part of a broader commitment to protecting farmers from the impacts of currency fluctuations and discouraging smuggling — a persistent issue in border communities.

“This pricing policy reflects COCOBOD’s unwavering commitment to ensuring fair and rewarding returns for farmers’ hard work,” the statement noted.

The Board added that by maintaining attractive and sustainable prices, it is reinforcing Ghana’s leadership in the global cocoa industry while improving the livelihoods of cocoa-growing communities.

“Ghana’s cocoa remains the global benchmark for quality, and now, backed by the highest farmgate price in West Africa, it also guarantees better livelihoods for our farmers,” the statement concluded.
