A 22-year-old man, identified only as Kwame, has been remanded into custody by a Koforidua court for allegedly robbing and raping a 25-year-old nurse undertaking her National Service.

The victim had rented a room in the accused’s family house only a few months ago. According to police reports, Kwame lured her out of the house under the pretext that someone was waiting to see her in front of the Yiadom Hwedie Palace of the New Juabenmanhene.

While she was away, Kwame allegedly changed his clothes, put on a mask, and entered her bedroom. Upon her return, he is said to have pulled a knife on her and demanded money. Fearing for her life, the victim handed over more than GH¢1,000 in cash. Kwame then demanded a mobile money transfer, but she had no funds in her account.

Still armed with the knife, the accused allegedly ordered the victim to undress and, under threat of death, forced her into a sexual position before assaulting her.

Kwame fled the scene immediately afterward and went into hiding. Despite his attempt to disguise his voice during the attack, the victim was able to identify him and reported the incident to the police.

Days later, Kwame appeared at the police station with his father to plead for forgiveness but was arrested on the spot. Upon seeing him, the traumatised victim reportedly went into shock, began jerking, and in frustration, slapped him multiple times.

Police obtained a medical report to support the investigation, after which Kwame was charged with rape, robbery, threat of death, and threat of causing harm. He has since been remanded as investigations continue.
