Kennedy Agyapong has refuted claims that his criticisms of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) played a role in the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) success in the 2024 general elections.
According to him, suggestions that his remarks were used in campaign adverts and contributed to the NPP’s defeat are misleading.
He maintained that the NDC’s real strategy was to capitalize on past statements and actions of Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, both before and during his time in government, to weaken the NPP’s position at the polls.
“You saw the former Chief Justice picketing. So during my campaign, I told them that anybody in that administration lost in 2022 because Ghanaians had decided they would get rid of us and they used that against me that I caused their defeat. Some candidates go round and say because of him we lost the election,” he stated.
Adding, “Did I say that when the fundamentals are weak, the exchange rate will expose you? The lady quoted it at the Agric Bank, did I say that I am going to lock the dollar, it is under lock and key and I’ve given the key to the police, whatever?
You think I am the only smartest person in the country that did not listen or hear? When they are losing their business and take a decision, now you use it against me that I caused the defeat? Today is an opportunity for me to explain this. Look at NDC advert, the number of adverts, what Bawumia said that they used against him and compare to the number of adverts they said I have said that. They have never been fair but I leave it to God”.
The former Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong explained that if his party had listened to him, the party wouldn’t have lost the 2024 elections.
“They’ve never been fair. I leave it to God. All the things I said were a caution to them; if they had listened to me, there wouldn’t have been this humiliating defeat ever but they didn’t listen because the whole party machinery was against Kennedy Agyapong,” he stated in an interview with Pan African Television.
