A lecturer at the Christian Service University College, Rev. Justice Poku Bofa, has argued that the GHC600,000 filing fee charged by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for presidential aspirants is not excessive and should even be increased.
He believes political parties must demand more from aspirants seeking to lead the country, including the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Rev. Poku Bofa dismissed recent concerns raised by NPP presidential hopeful, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, that the filing fee was exorbitant.
According to him, governance is a serious business, and anyone vying for the highest office of the land must be capable of mobilising resources and support.
“If you want to lead a country, one of the key qualities you need to demonstrate is your ability to raise and mobilise resources. You must have people who believe in you and are willing to support your vision financially,” he stated.
Rev. Poku Bofa emphasised that being able to raise such funds reflects a candidate’s leadership, influence, and organisational capabilities—qualities essential for running a government.
The GHc600k NPP is taken from the Presidential Aspirants is too small. The party needs to take more than that amount. Not only NPP but NDC as well. This is because the government is a serious business.”
His comments come in the wake of growing debates within political circles about the cost of contesting internal party elections, with some describing the high fees as a barrier to entry for competent but less affluent candidates.
Mr. Kwabena Agyapong, a former NPP General Secretary and one of the early aspirants to declare his intention to run for flagbearer, had earlier expressed dissatisfaction with the GHC600,000 fee, calling it prohibitive and elitist.
However, Rev. Poku Bofa believes that parties like the NPP and NDC should instead strengthen their financial requirements to ensure that only serious, resourceful, and well-organised candidates emerge.
“If you want to lead the country, one of the qualities you need to have is the ability to raise and mobilise resources. You must have people who believe in you and can support you with their resources.”Rev. Poku Bofa highlighted.
