President John Mahama has signaled tough consequences for road contractors who allegedly received double payments for projects executed under the previous administration.
According to the President, findings from a recent audit conducted by the Auditor General revealed that some contractors were paid twice—once from the Road Fund and again from the Ministry of Finance—for the same work done.
He emphasized that such financial irregularities will not be tolerated, and those found culpable will face the full force of the law.
“When we came, we asked the contractors to halt the work they were doing. We realized that with some of the roads, the road fund had paid, and the finance ministry has also paid for it because they sent the certificate there too.
“The Auditor-General has come with his report. So we are going to make the contractors go back to the site. But those who had double payment will be punished,” he stated.
The President was speaking in the Eastern Regional capital, Koforidua, during his thank-you tour when he made this known.
The President also used the opportunity to assure chiefs and the people of the Eastern region of work on their roads will start very soon to make them motorable, indicating that it is part of the big push he promised during the 2024 campaign.
