At least four people have been confirmed dead following the collapse of an illegal mining pit at Akyem Wenchi in the Denkyembour District of the Eastern Region. The incident occurred on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
Approximately 20 others are believed to be trapped beneath the rubble, as frantic rescue efforts continue at the site.
The exact cause of the collapse remains unclear, but emergency responders have been deployed to the scene. Personnel from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, and the Ambulance Service are currently working together to locate and rescue any survivors.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement on the full extent of the casualties or the condition of those still trapped. Rescue operations are ongoing.
