The Ashanti Regional Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Issah Abdul Salam, has expressed disagreement with former President John Agyekum Kufuor over his recent remarks accusing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of sidelining him from key party affairs.
Former President Kufuor, during an interaction with Abetifi MP and NPP flagbearer aspirant Dr. Bryan Acheampong, lamented what he described as a deliberate effort to exclude him from party matters due to his age. “Have I declined to the point where I can be dismissed or overlooked? My faculties are intact. I’m no relic. I deserve at least to be consulted,” Kufuor said.
However, reacting to the comments on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Mr. Abdul Salam argued that although the former president raised valid concerns, he chose the wrong platform to air his grievances.
“I think he said the right thing on the wrong platform given his stature,” the CPP regional secretary remarked. “President Kufuor cannot claim he is unable to reach out to anyone in the NPP to express his dissatisfaction. Unless someone visits him, he prefers to lament publicly.”
Mr. Abdul Salam further suggested that making such grievances public could deepen existing divisions within the NPP. He argued that sensitive internal issues, especially involving party elders, are better addressed privately.
“If he is aggrieved and wants to complain, he should have done so discreetly. Not everything needs to be brought into the public domain, especially considering the current state of the party,” he said. “Some already believe the party is divided, while others still look to elders like Kufuor to help mend the cracks. But if even he is lamenting publicly, it could worsen the situation.”
