Former Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has strongly condemned the violent incidents that marred the recent parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency, vowing that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will launch its own investigation if the government fails to act.
The rerun, held on Friday, was overshadowed by widespread violence at 19 polling stations, including physical assaults on political figures and journalists. One of the high-profile victims was former Minister of Special Development Initiatives, Mavis Hawa Koomson, who was reportedly attacked during the voting process.
Speaking in an interview with Kwesi Parker-Wilson on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, The former MP expressed disappointment at the silence of President John Dramani Mahama over the incident, calling his inaction deeply troubling.
“I am really disappointed in President Mahama for not saying anything. The president is not just a leader for this country; in his party, he is the leader of the NDC. The NDC members have done this, so where is the voice of the president?” he questioned.
He further criticized civil society organizations and religious leaders for what he described as selective activism.
“When the Ayawaso incident happened, we heard from pastors and civil society organizations who criticized it. Today, where are they? Or is it because they have been given appointments that they can’t talk anymore?” he added.
The former Majority Leader issued a warning that if the Mahama administration fails to investigate the Ablekuma North violence and ensure justice for the victims, the NPP will revisit the matter when it regains power.
“If President Mahama fails to investigate the Ablekuma North violence and ensure justice for the victims, when power changes, we in the NPP will investigate it,” he said.
