Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has strongly condemned recent incidents of military brutality against civilians in the Bawku Municipality, calling for immediate action from the military hierarchy.
In a statement issued on Sunday, July 13, the Majority Leader described the actions of certain military personnel as unacceptable, particularly highlighting the destruction of a culturally significant monument.
“I condemn, in no uncertain terms, the unacceptable act of destruction of the statue of the Zugran of the Kusaug Traditional Area, Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, by some military personnel,” he stated.
Mr. Ayariga also denounced a separate violent incident in which unidentified gunmen launched an attack on a vehicle under military escort.
“The violent gun attack by unknown youth on the vehicle escorted by soldiers is equally condemned. Such attacks must cease immediately,” he said.
Calling for calm, Mr. Ayariga urged the youth of Kusaug to exercise restraint and allow the authorities to address the matter through appropriate channels.
He extended his sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives and those injured in the recent clashes, assuring them of his commitment to seeking justice and lasting peace in the area.
The lawmaker called on the military high command to thoroughly investigate the incidents and ensure accountability to restore public confidence and prevent further escalation.
