Voting is currently taking place in the Ablekuma North constituency, where the Electoral Commission (EC) is conducting a parliamentary rerun in 19 polling stations to resolve disputes stemming from the December 7, 2024, general elections.
The rerun, scheduled for today, Friday, July 11, 2025, follows months of legal challenges and concerns over irregularities in the initial vote, particularly involving unauthenticated pink sheets and discrepancies during collation. The EC said the decision to hold fresh polls was aimed at ensuring transparency, credibility, and compliance with constitutional procedures.
Despite the Commission’s rationale, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has vehemently opposed the rerun. The party argues that the decision contradicts a High Court ruling that ordered the collation and declaration of results from the affected polling stations. Describing the EC’s move as “unjust,” the NPP announced a boycott and sought legal avenues to halt the process—efforts that were ultimately dismissed by the courts.
In a dramatic twist, the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, has defied her party’s directive and confirmed her participation in the rerun. Her decision has stirred mixed reactions within party ranks, although some local executives and Members of Parliament have publicly endorsed her and joined her campaign in the constituency.
Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, July 10, EC Deputy Chairperson for Corporate Services, Dr. Bossman Asare, reaffirmed the Commission’s independence and commitment to conducting a free and fair process.
“We are committed to bringing closure to the election in Ablekuma North and ensuring the constituency is duly represented in Parliament,” Dr. Asare stated. “We assure the public and political parties that the rerun will be fair, transparent, and credible.”
To ensure a smooth process, security has been reinforced across all affected polling stations, with EC officials and independent observers stationed on the ground.
The rerun is poised to be a decisive moment for the constituency. While the NPP seeks to retain its traditional stronghold, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), represented by Ewurabena Aubynn, is hoping to capitalize on the situation and secure a major political upset.
