Two men have been banished from the Chogu community in Tamale after being caught and confessing to stealing goats, according to local reports.
The suspects — Nafiwu Bakar, a National Service personnel with the Bole Forestry Commission, and his accomplice, Rashid Yussif — are both residents of Damongo in the Savannah Region. They were apprehended last Friday by a local vigilante taskforce while attempting to steal goats in the area.
Rather than handing them over to the police, community members brought the suspects before the traditional authorities, led by the Chief of Chogu.
Following a deliberation, the chief and elders ordered the immediate banishment of the two men from the community. The suspects allegedly told the elders that they were acting under instructions from unidentified individuals who had promised to pay them for the stolen livestock.
However, their explanation failed to convince the traditional leaders, who cited the men’s growing reputation for petty crimes and emphasized the need to send a strong message to deter similar behaviour.
In delivering the verdict, the Chief of Chogu underscored his commitment to preserving law and order, warning that criminal conduct would not be tolerated under his leadership.
“The safety and peace of our people must always come first,” he said.
