Two suspected armed robbers have been shot dead following a fierce exchange of gunfire with police on the Atebubu-Yeji highway in the Bono East Region.
According to information gathered by the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the incident occurred on the evening of Sunday, July 6, 2025, around 8:00 p.m., near the Kobre community. The robbers had reportedly ambushed and attacked a group of traders returning from the Yeji market to Atebubu, fatally shooting one person during the robbery.
A police highway patrol team responding to the scene encountered the suspects, leading to a gun battle. Two of the robbers were killed in the exchange, while one managed to flee with a gunshot wound, a reliable police source confirmed.
The police have launched a manhunt for the fugitive suspect. Investigations are ongoing.
One of the robbery victims, also a trader, told the GNA that the body of Mohammed Suraji Raweisu, 38 years old and popularly known as “Suker”, a livestock keeper, had since been buried according to the Islamic faith.
He spoke to the GNA on condition of anonymity, saying the armed robbers who had laid an ambush fired sporadic gunshots which hit the deceased, who was sitting behind the driver.
Sensing danger, the driver stopped the vehicle and fled to the bush for safety, saying the robbers robbed them of their money, mobile phones and other valuables. They also succeeded in robbing other passengers who were using the stretch.
Some residents of Kobre heard about the incident; however, when they arrived at the scene, the robbers had fled, and they took the body to the Yeji Matthias Hospital mortuary.
