The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a prime suspect linked to the fatal shooting incident that occurred during a naming ceremony at Gbawe on June 19, 2025.
The tragic incident claimed the life of Perl Naa Dodua Bortey-Kaa, a queen mother, and left another guest injured. According to Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Public Relations Officer for the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, the shooting took place around 7:00 p.m. when individuals wielding locally manufactured firearms began firing indiscriminately into the crowd.
The ceremony, organized by Ibrahim Nii Ayi Quarshi Solomon, was attended by traditional leaders and Asafo groups when chaos erupted following the reckless discharge of weapons.
Following intensive investigations, police tracked down and arrested the suspect, identified as Gilbert Awuni, popularly known as “Starboy,” at his hideout in Asokore Mampong in the Ashanti Region.
Superintendent Obeng warned the public against the unlawful possession, processing, or discharge of firearms, stressing that such acts are criminal offences and will be met with the full force of the law.
The Police Command praised the swift operation that led to the arrest and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order across the region. Authorities assured the public that all individuals connected to the incident will face justice as part of ongoing efforts to curb gun violence in the country.
