The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a strong call to the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, urging her to remain firm and resist alleged intimidation tactics from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking at a press briefing, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong encouraged Madam Mensa to uphold her personal and religious integrity by not succumbing to what the party describes as political pressure and threats from the NDC.
This follows recent remarks by NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, in which he allegedly threatened to remove top EC officials, including Jean Mensa, if the NDC comes to power. The NPP claims these threats are influencing Madam Mensa’s decisions, with Kodua asserting that she appears fearful and potentially swayed by such intimidation.
“We urge Madam Jean Mensa to remain grounded in her values and principles. Even the Chief Justice has not been spared from political attacks, but that should not deter her from doing what is right. Posterity will judge her actions,” Kodua said.
The NPP warned that yielding to such threats would undermine Ghana’s democratic process and set a dangerous precedent where political parties resort to intimidation or internal militia tactics instead of relying on legitimate campaign strategies and due electoral processes.
The party emphasized the need for Madam Mensa to safeguard the independence and credibility of the Electoral Commission, calling her role pivotal in maintaining public trust and democratic stability.
“As a nation, we must uphold the rule of law and not allow political pressure to dictate the conduct of our institutions. The EC must remain impartial, and Madam Mensa must stand strong in the face of these threats,” the NPP stressed.
