Kofi Okyere Darko, Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Presidency, has stated that his office is investigating the recent actions of a gay couple at the Black Star Square that have stirred public outrage.
On June 25, 2025, social media was set abuzz after photos of the couple, Lue and Rue, went viral under the hashtag #ShowGhanaLove. The images showed them sharing affectionate moments at prominent Ghanaian landmarks, including the Black Star Square, Osu Castle, Kwame Nkrumah Museum, and Aburi Botanical Gardens.
Their campaign aimed to show solidarity with Ghana’s LGBTQ+ community and protest the controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, which seeks to criminalize same-sex relationships with prison terms of up to 3 years and harsher penalties of 5 to 10 years for promoting LGBTQ+ rights.
The photos sparked widespread backlash online, prompting calls for government intervention. KOD, who briefly addressed the issue in a social media post before deleting it, later spoke to Adom FM, expressing his surprise that the couple had obtained official permission to film their content at such a revered national site.
“My concern was with their using the independence monument for their statement. Even though one can go there to take photos, you need permission to go there. So we are investigating how they got such permission.
“People asked if there were no security to spot them, but once they had permission, they would have been left alone,” he said.
KOD clarified his personal stance, stating: “If you are gay or bisexual, that is your own issue. But to put it out there, especially using Ghanaian flags and monuments, that is very, very wrong… especially as such activities are frowned upon in our land.”
He emphasised that he would consult his team to determine whether the permit process had been properly followed.
