Former District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ahafo Ano South East, Thomas Owusu Ansah, has clarified that not all former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) who served under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration between 2017 and 2024 support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 elections.
His comments come in response to recent reports suggesting that a coalition of over 220 former MMDCEs had thrown their collective weight behind the former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, widely perceived as a leading contender for the NPP flagbearership.
Speaking in an interview on Oyerepa Breakfast Time with host Kwesi Parker-Wilson, Thomas Owusu Ansah debunked the claim, describing it as misleading and inaccurate. While he personally supports Dr. Bawumia, he insisted that no unanimous decision had been made by the group.
“The first person to officially invite us [former MMDCEs] for a meeting was Dr. Bawumia. Kennedy Agyepong also met with us later, and we had an interaction with him. Bryn Achampong, however, did not invite us directly—we only happened to meet him during a retreat at his Rock City Hotel,” he explained.
He emphasized that during these engagements, no formal declaration of support was made for any of the aspirants.
“We never had any collective meeting to endorse any particular candidate. Some of us, after the meetings, decided to support Kennedy Agyepong. Others chose Bawumia. Some also preferred Bryn Achampong. But it’s not true that all of us support Dr. Bawumia,” he stressed.
