More than 60 Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have rallied in support of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, backing his anticipated bid to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.
The MPs held a private meeting with Dr. Bawumia on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at his office, signaling strong party unity ahead of the NPP’s upcoming presidential primaries.
The party recently announced that the primaries will take place on January 31, 2026, following a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on June 17. This schedule aims to give the party ample time to consolidate support behind a new flagbearer for the next election cycle.
Dr. Bawumia, who was the party’s presidential candidate in 2024, is widely expected to contest again.
Sources close to the meeting said the MPs voiced strong confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s leadership and urged him to formally declare his candidacy.
“We believe he remains the best hope for our party’s future, and we are ready to stand firmly behind him,” one MP, speaking anonymously, told reporters.
The gathering is seen as an early sign of growing momentum for Dr. Bawumia’s potential campaign. While he has not yet made an official announcement, the show of support underscores his ongoing influence within the NPP and could serve as a springboard for his 2026 campaign efforts.
