The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has launched a scathing critique of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), stating that the body, in its current state, is “not fit for purpose.”
Speaking in a recent interview on Onua TV, Asiedu Nketia raised serious concerns about the credibility and functionality of the Commission, especially in the context of its performance during previous electoral exercises.
“The fact is that the Commission in its current state is not fit for purpose,” he declared emphatically. “Everybody knows.”
He cited specific examples of what he described as questionable conduct by the EC during the collation of results in past elections.
“From the Volta Region, then directly to Greater Accra Region. You can’t even declare results,” he lamented, referring to what he believes were inconsistencies and irregularities in the transmission and announcement of results.
According to the NDC Chairman, the inability or unwillingness of the Commission to transparently declare results creates room for mistrust, confusion, and the potential for legal and political crises.
“No results can end in a stalemate without being able to declare them—unless someone wants to use their power and do something at variance with the law,” he warned.
“If you have well-meaning people who want to really play by the rules, you can,” he said, suggesting that the EC’s current leadership is acting outside the law and should be replaced.
He vowed to continue with his request until the required constitutional process is initiated to remove the current EC leadership, which he believes is long overdue.
The NDC has repeatedly accused the Jean Mensa-led EC of bias and electoral mismanagement—allegations the Commission has consistently denied.
