Prominent members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are expected to pay a courtesy call on President John Mahama in the coming days to plead for clemency on behalf of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
This was revealed by the Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, during an interview on Asempa FM. Although he did not specify the exact date or the composition of the delegation, Dr. Afriyie confirmed that the initiative has the full support of Chairman Wontumi.
“I spoke to Wontumi and suggested we should go and apologise, and he agreed. We are ready to plead with President Mahama to show restraint,” he stated.
Chairman Wontumi is currently under investigation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for alleged financial offences, including fraud and money laundering. According to Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem-Sai, the case may also involve links to an international organised crime network.
Wontumi was arrested on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, and spent nearly six days in EOCO custody as multiple attempts to secure bail failed. He was eventually released on June 2 after meeting bail conditions set at GH₵50 million with two sureties, both to be justified.
The planned visit by NPP stalwarts is seen as an attempt to de-escalate tensions surrounding the case and seek a more conciliatory approach as investigations continue.
