Former Minister for Food and Agriculture and Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has signalled the start of what appears to be his bid for the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In a widely circulated video message delivered in Pidgin English, Dr. Acheampong acknowledged the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections and called on members to reflect deeply on the outcome.
He emphasised the need for unity within the NPP and urged the party to reconnect with the grassroots to rebuild trust and support ahead of future elections.
“We went for an election in 2024 that did not go well when it comes to the result,” he said.
“But this is the time to reflect and see what Ghanaians didn’t like, for which reason they didn’t vote for us.”
He emphasised the need for internal harmony, warning that disunity and public spats were hurting the party’s image.
“Let us stand together. We must be one in heart and mind. We should watch our utterances to one another, which is very important. So that Ghanaians will see that we are a united party,” he added.
Dr. Acheampong disclosed that he had formed a committee to consult with party members and Ghanaians to assess whether his vision aligns with the aspirations of the party and the public. The committee, he said, was given one month to conduct this consultation.
Outlining his key focus areas, he mentioned jobs, food security, youth development, and infrastructure as central to his vision, should he be allowed to lead both the NPP and the nation.
“I have worked hard for this party — from the grassroots to organiser, party office, all the way to become MP and cabinet minister. I have contributed financially too. All this has helped me and given me some vision, which I want to share with Ghanaians.”
