Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), popularly known as Wontumi, has strongly criticized a National Security operation conducted at his residence, describing it as a politically motivated act and an abuse of power.
Speaking on Asempa FM, the outspoken NPP figure questioned the rationale behind the raid, expressing shock over the actions taken against him.
“Have I ever served as Vice President? Chaired any board? Worked as a CEO or been a minister? I am just a political party chairman, doing my job to campaign for my party. Why should I be targeted like this?” he asked.
The incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. on Friday, May 23, 2025. According to Wontumi, about 23 armed officers arrived in five separate vehicles and attempted to apprehend him.
He revealed that although he had been invited for questioning by the police on Monday, May 19, he was unable to attend due to ill health. He confirmed, however, that he had committed to appearing before authorities on Monday, May 26, at 10:00 a.m.
Wontumi disputed claims that the security officers were acting on an arrest warrant. “When I asked for a warrant, they couldn’t produce any. They only said they were instructed to bring me to Accra. Over 20 men, five vehicles — I struggled with them at the gate for over 30 minutes. They still didn’t manage to get hold of me,” he recounted.
He concluded by calling on the public to resist what he termed an emerging trend of intimidation against political opponents.
“This is not just about me — this is about protecting our democracy. Ghanaians must rise and speak out against this type of abuse,” he urged.
