The Senior Staff Association of Ghana, in collaboration with the Technical University Administrators Association (TUWAG) and the Federation of University Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSAG), has declared an indefinite strike effective Wednesday, May 21, 2025.
The joint action follows what the unions describe as the government’s persistent failure—both under the current and previous administrations to honour a six-month-old agreement aimed at improving their conditions of service.
Speaking on behalf of the unions, George Ansong, National Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Ghana, said the strike was a last resort after repeated attempts at dialogue were ignored.
“The Technical Universities Administrators Association of Ghana (TUWAG) and the Federation of University Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSAG) announce, with deep regret but unwavering resolve, our decision to embark on an indefinite strike action,” Mr. Ansong stated.
He described the government’s actions as neglectful and disrespectful, accusing it of failing to uphold commitments made in a signed agreement.
“Despite countless engagements and multiple extensions granted in good faith, the government has shown persistent inaction and blatant failure to meet its obligations,” he added.
The leadership of the unions has directed all members to stay away from work until their demands are addressed.
The strike is expected to disrupt administrative and technical operations across Ghana’s public universities, with union leaders warning that they will not return to work until the government fulfils its side of the agreement.
Mr. Ansong emphasized that the decision to strike was not taken lightly but was necessary to protect the dignity and welfare of their members.
“The government’s continued failure to act has eroded trust and damaged the cooperation we have long sought to maintain,” he said.
