President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed Dr. Adam Atiku, the Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), following reports of alleged negligence that contributed to the recent death of a patient in the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Ward.
The dismissal comes amid rising public concern over the deteriorating healthcare services at TTH. Several critical pieces of medical equipment at the facility are reportedly out of service, sparking alarm over the hospital’s ability to provide effective care.
In response to the growing crisis, Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, made an unannounced visit to the hospital on Tuesday, April 22. The visit was part of a broader initiative to assess and address the challenges affecting healthcare delivery in the Northern Region.
During the inspection, the Minister expressed deep concern over the number of idle medical machines at the hospital, despite payments having already been made to suppliers. He also drew attention to the ongoing water shortage in Tamale, noting its significant impact on hospital operations and calling for urgent intervention from the presidency.
On the issue of restoring the hospital’s functionality, Mr. Akandoh stated that the Ministry of Health would base its response on the priorities identified by hospital management. He urged residents to remain calm and continue using the hospital’s services, assuring them that steps were being taken to improve conditions.
“When we finish with them, we will all think through it,” the Minister said. “I cannot do it alone. I have to involve them, and we are thinking through it together. Everybody should remain calm and let us continue to patronise the facility.”
