Tragedy struck on Sunday night when two police officers were reportedly shot and killed by an unidentified assailant in Binduri, located in the Upper East Region of Ghana.
The incident occurred around 8:00 p.m., with reports indicating that the officers were off-duty at the time of the attack. Eyewitnesses stated that the victims were not in uniform, which supports the account that they were not on official assignment when they were targeted.
“It is very sad news. They were shot dead by an unknown civilian at 8 p.m.,” an officer, speaking under condition of anonymity, confirmed. “They were not on duty, so you can see they are not wearing their police uniforms,” another officer added.
Preliminary investigations by our reporter have revealed that one of the fallen officers hailed from Ngaleki, a community near the Atuabo Gas Plant in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region.
The nominee for the Ellembelle District Chief Executive (DCE) position, Mr. Joseph Agyekum, confirmed the officer’s identity and expressed his sorrow.
“He is my boy. I just spoke to the father… I know his parents, and I also know his household name,” Mr. Agyekum said, visibly shaken. “When will this barbaric act stop?”
The incident has left residents of the Ellembelle District in deep shock, mourning the sudden and tragic loss of a young officer from their community.
Authorities are yet to provide further details regarding the motive behind the attack or the identity of the assailant. Investigations are ongoing.
