Don’t reduce state institutions to political tools to intimidate opponents – Bawumia to Mahama

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has strongly condemned what he describes as the misuse of state security agencies to intimidate political opponents.

His remarks follow a visit to the residence of Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Member of Parliament for Assin South and Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence and Interior. On April 9, 2025, personnel believed to be from the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) reportedly surrounded Rev. Fordjour’s home in an attempted raid.

In a statement shared via social media, Dr. Bawumia expressed concern over what he called a disturbing trend of political harassment. “Last night, following the attempted raid by some alleged officials of the National Investigations Bureau, I visited Hon. Rev. John Ntim Fordjour. Rev. Fordjour was in high spirits and undaunted,” he wrote.

Dr. Bawumia warned against the growing climate of fear, noting that Ghanaians will not accept a descent into lawlessness. He emphasized that Ghana’s democracy is rooted in due process and the rule of law.

He also used the opportunity to urge members of his party to remain calm, steadfast, and law-abiding amid what he described as “unfortunate political persecution.”

I urge all Party faithful to remain calm, steadfast, and law-abiding in this period of unfortunate political persecution. I wish to reiterate my earlier submission to the President, H.E John Dramani Mahama, to immediately rein in his security operatives. State institutions must not be reduced to political tools used to harass and intimidate opponents. Ghanaians will not accept this descent into lawlessness and fear. Our democracy is hinged on due process and rule of law.
