Elizabeth Tetteh, the Queen Mother of Amasaman central market in the Ga West Municipal Assembly, is calling on the government to take immediate action to address the issue of traders refusing to sell at the main market and instead opting for roadside trading.
Speaking to Oyerepa news reporter Bernard K Dadzie in an exclusive interview, the Queen emphasized that the situation has created a ripple effect, where more traders are now moving to the roadside to sell their goods. This is because buyers have grown accustomed to purchasing from the roadside vendors instead of visiting the main market.
She reasoned that if all traders were to sell at the main market, buyers would naturally flock there to make their purchases. Therefore, she appealed to the authorities to take decisive action and relocate the roadside traders to the main market, restoring order and vitality to the designated market space.
Queen Mother Tetteh revealed that traders have repeatedly asked the Assembly to designate specific market days, but these requests have fallen on deaf ears. As a result, traders have been forced to sell their wares on the roadside, where they often risk accidents with passing vehicles.
She emphasized that the market facilities are adequate, but the lack of a designated market day is driving traders to the roadside.
The Queen Mother also expressed concern about the harassment and intimidation of traders by the police, highlighting the need for government intervention to support these women and their businesses.
