President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed that the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative was established to combat corruption and uphold accountability in public office, not to unfairly target individuals.
During a courtesy call on the Ghana Bar Association on Wednesday, Mahama emphasized that ORAL serves as a structured platform for whistleblowers to report corruption, ensuring that allegations are thoroughly investigated.
“One of the major challenges we face is corruption and accountability in public office. Unfortunately, it has become common for individuals to misappropriate public funds,” he stated.
He highlighted that corruption ranked among the top five concerns of Ghanaians in the last election, underscoring the government’s commitment to addressing the issue more aggressively.
Mahama further explained that ORAL was designed to facilitate direct whistleblower reports through a dedicated hotline, which has received over 2,000 calls. While some claims were unfounded, others held merit and were referred to the Attorney General for further action.
He assured that the initiative is not a tool for political persecution but a vital mechanism for tackling corruption.
“I want to make it clear that this is not about witch-hunting anyone. ORAL is a necessary instrument in the fight against corruption,” Mahama stated.
His remarks reinforced the government’s dedication to transparency and accountability in governance.
