The Acting Director General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba, has called on Okada and Pragyia riders to comply with road traffic regulations, cautioning that the police will arrest and prosecute those who violate the law.
Amaliba revealed that the NRSA is planning to provide road safety training for all riders, making it mandatory for them to wear designated uniforms and helmets before the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) issues specialised license plates for their motorcycles.
Addressing members of the Tricycle Operators Association in Koforidua as part of efforts to curb road accidents in the region, he stated that discussions are underway regarding the formation of unions for proper registration and regulation of riders.
“The legalisation will come with some restrictions. It will not be a free-for-all situation as it is now. We will train you on road safety because some of you simply acquire motorbikes and start riding without any knowledge of the rules. So, we will ensure you undergo the necessary training,” Amaliba stated.
“We will prescribe a uniform for you and a specific helmet. Then, the DVLA will issue a special number plate after training you on how to ride safely. The police will also begin enforcing the regulations, arresting those who fail to comply with road traffic laws,” he added.
The initiative aims to enhance safety standards among commercial motorcycle and tricycle riders, reducing accidents and ensuring better compliance with road regulations.
