Two individuals have lost their lives in separate incidents at Karlo in the Suaman District of the Western North Region after falling into abandoned galamsey pits.
The victims, identified as 38-year-old Abaawa Mary and 32-year-old Money Fresh, died under different circumstances.
According to reports, Money Fresh, an illegal miner, slipped and fell into a galamsey pit while washing down after work. Witnesses suggested he may have been under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident.
In a separate case, Abaawa Mary reportedly went to fetch water from an abandoned pit to irrigate her vegetable farm but lost her footing and drowned.
Sources indicate that Abaawa Mary was a resident of Dadieso, the district capital, while Money Fresh’s hometown remains unknown.
The Assemblyman for the Karlo Electoral Area, Eric Armah, confirmed that the police were notified, and the bodies have been transported to the mortuary.
Expressing concern over the growing danger posed by abandoned galamsey pits, Armah revealed that five people have died under similar circumstances this year alone. He called on authorities to take immediate action to prevent further tragedies.
