Miracles Aboagye, the former Communications Director of the Bawumia 2024 election campaign, has expressed regret over his decision not to instruct New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters to storm collation centres during the 2024 elections.
His remarks come in response to actions taken by supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who had reportedly besieged several collation centres across the country.
Speaking in an interview, Aboagye explained that at the time of his last press conference, the NPP believed they were in the lead, which influenced his decision.
“At the time we held our press conference a little after midnight, the NDC had already called on their supporters to storm the collation centres. We had not planned a press conference at that hour, but after their announcement, we felt it was our responsibility to prevent clashes between our supporters and theirs. Looking back, that is one of my regrets,” he stated.
He further expressed that had he anticipated the NDC’s actions, he would not have prevented NPP supporters from responding in kind.
“If I had known that the NDC would resort to such tactics in 2024—especially in places like Nsawam and Ablekuma North—we would have acted differently. I regret that decision and apologise,” he added.
Aboagye emphasized that in political battles, it is crucial to respond strategically. He noted that at the time of his press conference, the NPP’s internal data indicated they were in the lead, making it unnecessary to mobilize supporters to the collation centres.
“If I had instructed NPP supporters to go to the collation centres, perhaps by now, the outcome of the election and even the handing-over process would have been different,” he concluded.
