The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has directed security agencies to launch a comprehensive investigation into the recent explosion at Odumasi, near Konongo in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality. The tragic incident claimed two lives, left several others injured, and caused significant damage to properties.
Speaking to journalists after visiting the site, Dr. Amoakohene condemned the explosion and assured the public that those responsible would be held accountable.
“We had a similar experience at Appiatse, and I had hoped we wouldn’t face such a tragedy again. Sadly, here we are,” he said. “I have instructed security agencies to thoroughly investigate, especially in mining communities, to determine whether explosives are being sold illegally.”
He described the incident as an act of lawlessness, stressing that storing and selling explosives in town is unacceptable. “We are fully in control of the situation. The security agencies will conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that all those responsible face justice,” he added.
To support affected families, Dr. Amoakohene donated GHC5,000 to each household that suffered losses due to the explosion.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, March 5, around 7 p.m., affected 30 buildings and eight shops. The explosion originated from stores selling dynamite and other explosives used by local miners, leading to powerful blasts that shook the ground, damaged structures, and left many injured.
The explosion happened approximately 50 meters from a fuel station, raising concerns about the potential for an even greater disaster. The cause of the blast remains unclear, but authorities reported that the driver of the first fire tender on the scene collapsed due to the impact. Another firefighter sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital.
Security agencies are expected to intensify investigations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
