The Member of Parliament for Techiman South, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has commended former President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to provide additional compensation to the victims of the Techiman South shooting incident during the 2020 general elections.
A High Court in Wenchi recently ordered the state to pay GH¢270,000 to six individuals who sustained injuries during the violent incident at the Techiman South collation center.
However, many have criticized the amount as insufficient, given the severity of the injuries and loss of lives that occurred during the confrontation.
In response to the court ruling, former President Mahama, who was the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2020 elections, pledged that his party would provide further support and justice for the victims should they come into power.
His remarks have been welcomed by various individuals, including the Techiman South MP.
Speaking in an interview with Kwesi Parker Wilson on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah expressed his agreement with Mahama’s position, stating that the compensation awarded by the court was inadequate.
“The compensation that was given to the victims of the Techiman South shooting incident in the 2020 election by the court, I do not agree, it was so scanty. Someone has been seriously injured, others have lost their lives, and you are giving them GH¢25,000, no, it’s wrong. Even what individual persons gave the family was better, though it will not bring back the lost lives. So if President Mahama says he will compensate them again, I strongly agree with him and am happy to hear that,” he said.
