Traders at the Kwadaso Wood Market in the Ashanti Region have called on authorities to intervene in the high cost of acquiring stalls following the market’s redevelopment.
According to the traders, spaces at the market, which was recently gutted by fire, are being sold for GH₵4,000 each. They argue that after suffering significant losses due to the fire, they are now being burdened with high fees for reconstruction.
The Kwadaso Wood Market was ravaged by two fire incidents in January 2025, resulting in millions of cedis in losses. Some traders who have already paid for the stalls have expressed deep concerns over the high cost.
Former Presiding Member of the Kwadaso Municipal Assembly, Kwame Kwakye, who led the traders in a press conference, urged the authorities to step in and address the situation.
Additionally, Richard Tutu, the Assembly Member for the Nsia Asare Electoral Area, revealed that the local assembly was not consulted in the reconstruction process. He also warned that poor planning in the redevelopment could lead to future fire outbreaks.
