A candidate in the Ashanti Regional Council of State Election, Rev. Alexander Nti, has raised serious concerns about the conduct of the Electoral Commission (EC) boss during the elections held on Tuesday, February 11, 2025.
He has called for the immediate removal of the EC official, citing incompetence and misinformation.
The election, which took place at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, was disrupted by unidentified thugs, forcing the process to a sudden halt.
Speaking on Kumasi-based Ezra TV, Ashanti Regional EC Chairman, Francis Osei Nsia claimed that the disturbance occurred while EC officers were counting the ballots of the first candidate.
However, in an interview with Oyerepa Online, Rev. Alexander Nti refuted the EC boss’s statement, asserting that the ballots were still being sorted when the chaos ensued.
“I am highly disappointed in the EC boss for spreading false information. As a candidate present at the scene, I can confirm that counting had not started when the thugs stormed the venue. The officials were only sorting the ballots,” he stated.
Rev. Nti also expressed frustration over the inaction of law enforcement. He claimed that he had alerted the former Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Frank Abrokwa, along with other officers, about the presence of the thugs before the disruption, but his warnings were ignored.
“I confronted the Ashanti Police Commander, warning him that the thugs could cause trouble, but he refused to take action,” he lamented.
Given the events of the election, Rev. Nti has called for the removal of the EC boss, arguing that he is unfit to oversee the re-election scheduled for Monday.
He also raised security concerns, questioning the reliability of the police officers assigned to the election.
“If the same police officers are responsible for security on Monday, then we—the 12 candidates—are not safe,” he warned. “Furthermore, if the same EC boss is in charge, the election will not be fair.”
