Dr. Frank Amoakohene, Ashanti Regional Minister, has issued a two-week ultimatum to illegal miners operating in forest reserves and water bodies across the region, warning them to vacate or face the full force of the law.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to curbing illegal mining (galamsey), Dr. Amoakohene emphasized the urgent need to protect the region’s forests, water bodies, and other natural resources from further devastation.
Speaking at a media engagement in Kumasi, he highlighted the widespread destruction caused by illegal mining, including severe environmental degradation, contamination of water sources, and the loss of farmlands.
“This ultimatum underscores our determination to safeguard the environment and promote sustainable development. Those engaged in illegal mining must take this warning seriously and vacate these areas to avoid legal repercussions,” he cautioned.
Beyond the fight against galamsey, Dr. Amoakohene also addressed key regional concerns such as social infrastructure, economic growth, unemployment, security, and transportation. He assured the public of his commitment to tackling these challenges in collaboration with all relevant stakeholders.
He further pledged to foster good governance by maintaining open communication and continuous engagement with the people of the Ashanti Region.
