Nana Agyenim Boateng, widely known as ‘Gyataba,’ Founder and Leader of the United Front Party (UFP), has issued a contentious statement in response to the tragic events in Obuasi.
Speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast Show, Gyataba described the youth involved in the recent clash with the military at the AngloGold Ashanti mining site as being “like terrorists ready to face the military.”
The incident, which occurred earlier this week, saw several youths shot and killed by military personnel after they invaded the mining site. The confrontation has sparked outrage and debates across Ghana, with questions about the handling of the situation by both the military and the local youth.
Addressing the incident, Gyataba stated, “The actions of the youth in Obuasi were not ordinary. They acted like terrorists, prepared to confront the military without fear. This kind of behaviour escalates tensions and leads to tragic consequences like the one we are witnessing now.”
He called for introspection among the youth and urged leaders in the community to guide them toward more constructive ways of addressing grievances.
Background of the Incident:
The confrontation began when a group of youth reportedly stormed the AngloGold Ashanti mining site, claiming their right to access resources they believed were unjustly withheld from the community. In response, the military was deployed to restore order. The clash turned violent, resulting in the loss of nine lives.
