The Korley Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA) has joined the rest of Ghana in celebrating the 40th anniversary of National Farmer’s Day, recognizing the vital contributions of farmers to the country’s economy and food security. This year’s event marked the fifth edition of the National Farmers Day celebration in KoKMA since its establishment.
Municipal Chief Executive Samuel Nii Adjei Tawiah presented awards to six gallant farmers, acknowledging their hard work and dedication. He emphasized that farmers are often the unsung heroes of Ghana, providing livelihoods for many and ensuring food security for the nation.
Adjei Tawiah highlighted the significance of agriculture in Ghana, stating that it is the main source of livelihood for many Ghanaians. He encouraged the municipality to adopt farming practices for both home and commercial purposes to boost the local economy.
Miss Sylvia Agyemang, Municipal Director of the Department of Agriculture at KoKMA said
Ghana has been celebrating its farmers and fishermen since 1985, typically on the first Friday of December every year. However, during election years, the celebration is held in November instead.
She stressed that the National Farmers Day celebration aims to recognize the hard work and contributions of farmers and fishermen to Ghana’s economy and food security. It’s a significant event that acknowledges the importance of agriculture in the country.
Mr Solomon Armah Otto, the overall farmer thanked the assembly for the recognition and urged youth in the fish business and Agriculture to work hard and have faith in themselves in order to succeed in the business.
Other farmers were awarded in categories such as Overall Best Farmer, Best Livestock Farmer, Best Crops Farmer, Best Agricultural Worker, Best Processor and Best Well Operational Market, which was won by Tema Station Market as the Best Market 2024.
The winners received exciting prizes, such as boots, shovels, cutlasses, a 32-inch TV set, a freezer, clothes, a wheelbarrow, and many more.
