*Small Scale Mining Not A Criminal Venture, Don’t ban It – Lawyer Charles Owusu Urges Government
Lawyer Charles Owusu, CEO of K-San Law Firm, is urging Ghanaians to stop pressuring the President to ban small-scale mining, citing the country’s tense atmosphere ahead of the December 7th general elections.
With the President’s term ending in two months, Owusu believes it’s pointless to pressure him into making a decision that would have significant consequences.
Lawyer Charles Owusu emphasizes that small-scale miners operating with licenses should not be banned, as they are legitimate business owners. Instead, he advocates for addressing the issue of Galamsey, or illegal mining, which is the real problem.
These illegal miners, known as galamseyers, dig small working pits, tunnels, and sluices by hand, often causing environmental damage and health risks.
Owusu stresses that the focus should be on solving the Galamsey problem, rather than penalizing legitimate small-scale miners who have obtained licenses and operate within the law. By addressing the root causes of Galamsey, Ghana can mitigate its harmful effects and promote sustainable mining practices.
He suggests letting the next President, who will have a four-year mandate, tackle the issue of illegal mining and restore the country’s water quality. He also advises churches against protesting illegal mining, citing biblical principles.
