The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has taken legal action against the Electoral Commission (EC) following the disqualification of its presidential candidate, Kofi Asamoah-Siaw, from the upcoming 2024 elections.
On Friday, the EC announced the disqualification of 11 presidential aspirants, including Asamoah-Siaw, while clearing 13 candidates to contest the elections scheduled for December 7.
The EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa stated that all candidates were provided the opportunity to rectify any errors on their nomination forms after issues were identified.
However, Nana Ofori Owusu, the PPP National Chairman, contended that the EC failed to afford them the same opportunity to correct mistakes on their submission.
On September 25, the PPP Chairman applied for a review against the EC which is set to be heard by the High Court on September 30, 2024.
The motion, scheduled for September 30, 2024, seeks to quash a letter dated September 20, 2024, in which the Chairperson/Returning Officer of the Electoral Commission disqualified Asamoah-Siaw from contesting in the upcoming 2024 Presidential Election.
The application argues for an order compelling the EC to accept his nomination forms, subject to any necessary legal amendments, and to clear him as a qualified candidate for the election.
Counsel representing Asamoah-Siaw will present the case at 9 AM, with the hope of overturning the disqualification and allowing the PPP candidate to participate in the electoral process.
