In a significant step towards improving sanitation, the Abenase-Asaapong Traditional Council in the Ejisu Municipality, Ashanti Region, has broken ground for a 16-seater public toilet facility.
This community-funded initiative aims to tackle the long-standing issue of open defecation due to the lack of toilet facilities.
At a sod-cutting ceremony on Sunday, September 22, 2024, lead member of the Asaapong Traditional Council, Nana Adusei Boadi Acheampong (Asaapong Gyaasehene) highlighted the project’s vital importance, emphasizing concerns over community sanitation.
According to him, the community has grappled with open defecation for more than five decades, leading to alarming health implications.
“I’m thrilled to see our community getting its first ultra-modern toilet facility after over 50 years without one.
This project is a game-changer, and I’m grateful to our Chief Nana Fosu Dombarima II, the Asaapong Dikuro, for generously providing 1000 blocks, 3 trips of sand, and 50 bags of cement to kickstart construction.” The Asaapong Gyaasehene stated.
He urged the residents to rally behind the project, ensuring its timely completion.
“I implore the people of Asaapong to join forces and make this project a success.” Nana Adusei Boadi Acheampong pleaded.
Assembly Member for Abenase Electoral Area, Adom Saahene confirmed the project’s timeline and emphasized its significance in improving local sanitation.
He said the project is expected to be completed in December.
Adom Saahene added that the facility after its completion will halt the open defecation menace in the community.
